HUM 221 links -- 'Salmon Boy' and Alaska Native values

Here are the links to the story and to the webpage on Alaska Native values put up by the Alaska Native Knowledge Network at UA Fairbanks. (By the way, the term "Alaska Native" includes both American Indian peoples like the Haida and three or four distinct peoples that we lump together as Eskimo.)

Salmon Boy http://www.firstpeople.us/FP-Html-Legends/SalmonBoy-Haida.html

Alaska Native Values http://www.ankn.uaf.edu/ANCR/Values/index.html

Here are some questions I want you to think about as you read the legend -- and the information about the Haida language and people -- and post answers to:
1. What specific values mentioned in the UAF webpage -- like respect, for starters -- do you find reflected in the story?

2. Coming from another culture, how much do you share these values? Which would you say are universal human values? Which do you think would reflect a sea-faring culture that lives in close harmony with nature?

3. What do you think of the story, just as a story?
Read each other's responses. Feel free to agree, or to go out on your own ideas. You have my permission to be all over the map.

How to post your response

Showing respect for others: In the story called " Salmon Boy", there is a prime example of showing respect for others around you. In the story, the boy was taught to throw the salmon bones back into the river after eating the meat. By doing this, the Salmon people could remain as one, seeing as how the fish would come back to life when their remains are thrown back into the water. When the boy had to take a journey into the river itself as a salmon, he learned a life lesson. In the end, he learned to treat others as he would want to be treated, and to respect any and everyone, even if they aren't his kind.

The story is showing when you disrespect something that end up paying a price for it. The boy disrespected the salmon and he eventually became a salmon and learned how to respect salmon or respect each other.

this story is talking about how the boy disrespected the salmon and how the boy is a salmon now. He realizes what it is like to be a salmon and is now paying a price for disrespecting the salmon.

The story "Salmon Boy", it teaches a lesson about respect. The boy always had been disrespectful especially to the salmon. Then one day he turned into one and finally learned what respect means. In the end he changed and was respectfull and helped anyone.

1.a)The certain values that were implied in this story are show respect to others, Share what you have, Know Who You Are,
Accept What Life Brings, Take Care of Others and, Honor Your Elders.

1.b) Respect I believe in this story was the main message being portrayed. This boy was so disrespectful to these salmon and with him being disrespectful a lesson was learned.

2.) When I first read this story I thought the values were important to know and be excercised but I myself don't live my life daily by my elders and making sure I give the right respect towards them. We all act how we were raised and none of us in this culture are really raised the way the boy in the story was.

3.) I thought the story was a little extreme and deffinately unbelievable but I think the main point and moral of the story got accomplished. The boy in the end learned his lesson and actually helped others!!

The main message that the story "Salmon Boy" was trying to get across is respect. The boy disrespected salmon so he became a salmon. He then saw why salmon needed to be respected. I think that respect is a universal value. It would be very difficult to find a culture that does not value respect.

Showing respect was definitly one of the main values reflected in Salmon Boy. In our culture we share all of these values. I think showing respect to others, have patience, honor your elders, and share what you have, are the most universal values today. See connections would probably reflect a sea-faring culture best because they would connect nature with their lifestyle which would incorporate into their values. The story was unpredictable and didn't turn out the way i expected. I really liked the message it portrayed because sometimes our civilization forgets to have values and this story is good reminder how to show respect to others.

The one major message portrayed in salmon boy was respect. I think repect is importaint in todays society. The story itself was oboviously unrealistic. It got the point across but was not believable.

The story "Salmon Boy" shows that all actions have consequences. The boy disrespected the salmon and they punished him for it. They showed him what they go through on a daily basis and made him realize what he was doing to their community. He was killing their people and he needed to realize it. Respect is a universal quality and needs to be shown to everyone

I believe the value of sharing what you have applies to the story, because Salmon Boy shares his information he has gathered in the water to his family and the natives when he returns for his visit. Also, the value of seeing connections is shown in this story. I believe that humans share fairly close to the same values in every culture, and the Alaska Native cultures are present in our culture as well. I believe this story teaches a very good lesson on respect and the idea that everything is connected.

1. I find that all of the Alaska Native Values are reflected in the salmon story.when little boy was not respecting the salmon, one of the values that the alaska native believe in is showing respect for other's. The little didn't respect the salmon at all.

2.I share some of the same values as the Alaska Native for example, i respect others,i share what i have, and i try to have patience.

3. I think that the Salmon Boy story is a great tale of how Alaska Native respect and value every part of life and what's around them. Their humble people that only want peace and harmony, so thier values mean alot them.if more people would take the time to value things around them maybe it wouldn't be war's maybe we could live in peace.

The story of the "Salmon Boy" is a lesson to be learned. No matter where you are from or what you believe in you better stick with it because if you do not believe in anything up there bad things can happen.

1. Respect is the consistent message that comes through to the reader in legend of "Salmon Boy." Lack of respect at the beginning, then by the end he realizes why the cultural values that his people hold are so important.

2. I have respect for the cultural values of my family and those who came before, but i don't know if our culture places as much emphasis on following the ways of the ones before us, now a days, it's all about the new.

3. It's a decent story, the way it's written seems kind of elementary, but i think it's just because it was either translated or just written down from its' oral form. Not bad though

1. The values shown in this story are showing respect. Knowing where you came from. Learning about the culture in which you live in.

2. This story has shown me that it is important to know where you come from and have an open opinion to it. Unlike the boy in the story he wasn't open to the culture until it had an affect on him.

3. I thought the stroy had an important theme. The theme of knowing and being proud of where you come from. In today's society children hardly know what their hertiage is or their culture. It is sad, Iam sad for them. Knowing your culture is part of knowing who you are. This story does a good job of reminding us of that.

Respect is the main value that is being portrayed throughout the story. I find that respect is needed in every culture and society. I thought the story was making a good point that respect is very important to have. But, it was too unrealistic.

The story "Salmon Boy" is about a young boy who did not respect the values and beliefs of others. Because of this display of disrespect, he eventually becomes a salmon. Although the story is not believable, the message that comes from the story is, as is true with the majority of native american stories.

1.) I believe it means respect others and live your life carefully because if you disrespect others it can come back to hurt you.
2.) Treat others how you want to be treated, share what you have to others, and always respect your elders and one another. The universal values includes respect others and to live your life carefully.
3.) The story was different, but I think it was meant to show the similarities between the two cultures.

1. I think that the boy needed to respect everything around him he is part of the circle of life and so is everything else in this world.
2. I agree entirly with the values that are portrayed in this story. If you dont respect nature then there will be major consinquences that will take effect. I think the universial human values are treat everyone the way that you want to be treated. Treat everyone with kindness and respect and you never know what kind of impact you might have on them.
3.I like it alot it has a lot of great golden morles and lets you know that you need to be kind to people who are older than you

1. The values that are reflected in the story are Show respect for others, share what you have, live carefully, take care of others, honor your elders, and see connections

2. We share most of these values but the main ones would be Show respect to others, take care of others, and honor your elders. The ones from a sea-faring culture that would be most important would be Show respect to others, share what you have, and live carefully.

3. The story shows how different our two cultures are but it has a good message that any culture can agree with.

Mitch Smith said...

1) show respect to others was related because the boy had to show respect to the salmon, and take care of others was shown because if he took care of the salmon and threw the bones back into the river, they would take care of him and replenish to feed him more.

2) I feel all these values should be used in our culture here unfortunately they are not all used. I don't believe any of the values are used more than the others. Each value has a significant amount of people that don't have that value. All of the values can be related to a culture that lives closely with nature.

Living carefully also is greatly told in the story. A brief definiton of living carefully is thinking about what you do and it coming back upon you. In "Salmon Boy", the boy did this by throwing his fish bones into the bushes many times, knowing that he was supposed to throw them back into the river. And because of this, all his mishave came back upon him, which turned him into a salmon so that he could experience what sorrow he was putting the fish people through. When he finally came to reality, he had realized that you can't do senseless things just because you want to. You have to also think about who you're hurting and how you're hurting them.
2.In our culture, I can say that we share all of these values on a daily basis. I've always been taught to show respect for any and everyone around me, to respect my elders, and to also have patience, because sometimes great things come to those who wait. Althought these values have great meaning to the Native American culture, we also associate these values with our culture, while using them in everyday life. To me, i believe values like showing respect towards others, taking care of others, and honoring your elders would be considered universal values. These are values that most,if not all, humans deal with every single day in plenty of situations. Within a sea-faring culture, i believe that they'd take great pride in values such as accepting what life brings, and praying for guidance would have a close relation to a culture that was closely in touch with nature.
3. After reading the story, it made me think about life and its lessons. In life, you can't just walk all over life just because they don't look like you and I. Showing respect for all aspects of nature will grant you prosperity in the future. In my opinion, the Native American culture as a whole, is able to teach many lessons, whether you're dealing with life situations or simply in general.

1. the boy had no respect for the fish or his own people. he took it for granted and was taken by the salmon people. he had to throw bones in the stream and when he did another boy was healed
2. i think every culture has the same values used in various ways. respect for your elders is a universal item.
3. i think the story is good. it seems to be very elementary but that is good from time to time.
