It was discovered in 1741 and used to be a part of Russia. In 1867, after lengthy negotiations, Alaska was sold to the United States for the price of $7.2 million. It was called a "box of ice", a "polar bear garden" and Walrussia. But in the language of its indigenous peoples, the word Alaska means The Great Land.
